Disaster Recovery

Overview

Most businesses recognise the imperative need to recover its critical data at some point and it is an area that they believe is something they have under adequate control.

.

Unfortunately most in-house recovery systems and processes are not up to scratch. Back in 2001 the majority of organisations relied on manual systems for most of their data processing. Research carried out at that time showed that after a critical event showed that more than 40% of companies never reopened again; more than half closed their doors within two years, and only 6% survived beyond two years.

Nearly 15 years later most businesses now rely in large part on IT systems to store and manipulate their data. Disaster Recovery involves the restoration of ICT (Information and Communications Technology) after a significant disruptive event which affects data use or storage to a usable state and, as such, it forms a critical part of an overall Business Continuity plan.

.

The process involves implementing:

  • Preventive measures designed at preventing an event from happening
  • Detection measures used to identify unwanted events
  • Corrective measures to restore or correct the system after an event
